We are doing photos for an aperture portfolio, so it has me nostalgic for racing. Mostly because of all the things we need to do for class, I have a thousand photos I could have used. Unfortunately, I can only use photos taken after the assignment was issued. I've added a ton of photos from an autocross a few months back. I'm slowly going back through some old photos I have taken and revisiting them a little. Surprisingly, many are decent. I say that because less than a month after getting a DSLR, I moved into full manual mode for most shooting. I still use a few other modes, but mostly just to ensure I get the shot when I don't have time to keep adjusting (IE racing). I was surprised that most were fairly well exposed, little blur and generally had a decent composition. This surprises me because the more I end up learning, the more complex it all actually is. It's very easy looking into photography to think that it's all just a click of a button. I think that is why so many get involved in it. It also may be why you can find so many cameras for sale on craigslist...
The conclusion? I was really lucky when I started out. I'm slowly replacing that luck with a little skill.
